An Objective is what you want to achieve, the direction you are moving in. Qualitative, describing a state you want to reach, not a number.
What makes a good Objective, three qualities:
- Inspiring. It makes people want to work toward it. Not a management instruction, a statement of ambition the team can rally around.
- Clear. Anyone reading it should immediately understand what success looks like. Vague Objectives lead to vague work.
- Time-bound. Achievable within a defined period, usually a quarter. This creates urgency and focus.
The verb matters: compare "To improve team performance," which is intent, not commitment, against "Build a high-performing team that delivers consistently," which is directional and clear.
Start every Objective with a strong verb. Avoid starting with "to," it sounds like a wish. An Objective should sound like a promise.
